As a work of fiction and fantasy game of thrones has dominated on the world stage. Ever since it graced our screens in 2011 it has captivated millions of viewers from around the world. In fact it has managed to achieve what star wars and star trek have achieved, becoming a global phenomenon. Despite the show ending in 2019 on a subpar note it has managed to maintain its relevance in pop culture. The good news for fans is that the show will feature a prequel spin-off series dubbed House of the dragon. The question is, will the show be as big as Game of thrones.

Game of thrones

Game of thrones offered fans and general viewers what most TV shows can’t, an experience which transcends genre. Meaning that even if you are not a fan of medieval adaptions, you will be gripped by show’s progressive and yet slow story telling style.  The show does not shy away from killing off characters either, which is an aspect that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

However the main captivating element of the show is that the world of Westeros is so vast that its almost impossible to tell where the story will take the characters, that is if you haven’t read the book. Depending on perspective the TV show subtly revolves around Jon Snow the “bastard” son of lord Eddard stark. We later discover that he is fact not a bastard but the heir to the iron throne. This is what makes the show unique, you never know what to expect.

Before the show ended in 2019.There had been speculations regarding which direction the show would take in terms of spin-offs. Some of them include titles such as the long night. Which features the first men and the children of the forest as they fight against the white walkers. This would have been a more favorable option because it would have showcased the age heroes and the origins of house Stark. It would have given us a window into the lives of fabled heroes like Bran the builder, we would know if the romanticism placed on these characters is deserved.

Sadly the Long night never made it past the pilot, it was cancelled. Another interesting spin-off direction is that of modern Westeros. Although it was largely fan fiction based, it would have been interesting to see what the world of Westeros would have looked like thousands of years after the events of the original show. Perhaps it would have provided some light on what happened to Jon Snow when he was exiled beyond the wall. Did he become king of the free folk? Did he sire any children? What became of Bran the broken? The questions and probabilities are endless. However the most certain spin-off to date is House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon will chronicle the story of the house Targaryen. The show will focus on the events that occurred 300 years before the events of game of thrones. Specifically the Targaryen civil war. Which from a mirrored stand point, you could compare to the fall of the house of Usher. The Targaryen civil war is the event that destroyed or rather weakened house Targaryen to the point where it became a shell of its former glory.

In terms of scale you can expect it to be grander than its predecessor. Targaryens equals dragons and dragons equal a huge production budget. You can expect to see a lot them since the story also focuses why these creatures became so scarce. The story will probably span for a long time perhaps as long as game thrones. The Targaryen civil war does feature quite the roster characters such as Daemon Targaryen, Alicent Hightower and Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. This gives way to the speculation that character arch and character development, will play a major role in how long the show will run.

What’s a Targaryen spin-off series without Aegon the conqueror? For such a legendary character not to be included in this spin-off series could prove to be unfavorable to some. However Aegon the conqueror’s presence wouldn’t make sense in this part of house Targaryen’s story. Perhaps he will appear in a flash back sequence. Just as the mad king and Rhaeger Targaryen did in game of thrones.

Taking these factors into consideration the House of the dragon spin-off series could probably be as big as GOT. However it also depends on whether the show runners will stay true to the source material. We might not have worry because George R.R Martin will have some creative control.
