Genetic Scissors, the cure for cancers and genetic conditions.

We live in a world ravaged by diseases and ailments. Despite this great disadvantage our species has managed to endure and weather the storm. The practice of medicine has seen an enormous amount of change. This is particularly true when it comes to treatments and techniques. The key to eradicating diseases exists in genetics, hence the discovery of the genetic scissors otherwise known as CRISPR-Cas9.

What is CRISPR-Cas9?

Nobel peace prize recipients Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens in Germany and Professor Jennifer A. Doudna of the University of California in the USA. In the wake of 2011, the two professionals through intensive research managed to discover that CRISPR. A natural defence component found in DNA and an enzyme called Cas9 which can be used to alter DNA. DNA alteration has many benefits that could impact the way we live.  

How does it benefit us?

CRISPR-Cas9 is an essential component in gene editing. Gene editing and manipulation is a very important advancement in the field of medicine and agriculture. So let’s say you have a genetic trait that is a contributing factor to you having a certain type of cancer. The genetic scissors can eliminate the genetic mutation which causes that specific cancer. In agriculture CRISPR-Cas9 is used in instances like crossbreeding. Another example is that is can alter components like fat content in plants such as soy beans.

Plants just as humans are prone to being affected by viral diseases, CRISPR-Cas9 can aid in fortifying biotic stress tolerance. Meaning that plants will in theory be able to withstand the effects of potentially damaging fungal. The taste of certain crops can also be changed which opens up doors to other avenues.

Hypothetical possibilities

Hypothetically it is possible that CRISPR-Cas9 could be capable of much more. Think about how many are without 20/20 vision, this could change with the application of the gene scissors. Viruses like HIV that have endured and ravaged countless livelihoods will be eliminated. There is much CRISPR-Cas9 can do in the medical field and much more it can accomplish in agriculture. Perhaps this could be the answer to world hunger, the possibilities are countless.
